When I saw this antique child’s kitchen at my local Restore, I noticed the top cabinet doors were missing but that helped me see this piece in a new light.

There was still a lot of potential in this piece and it could store a lot of things. I couldn’t wait to get started on it.

Supplies Used In This Repurposed Antique Child’s Kitchen

All-In-One Paint

Gel Stain (Walnut)

Square

New board for the top

Drill

Sander

Multi Tool

Wood Knobs

Steps To This Makeover

The first thing we had to do was remove the top “cabinet” part.

I was really hoping I would be able to keep the original top that was on the bottom drawers. The way the top piece was on the bottom part, I wasn’t able to keep it because there was an indent. On to Plan B.

Matt used the square and the multi-tool (both linked above under supplies). He made a straight cut to remove the top part.

You can see in the photo above how the indents on the top were after we removed the top. So, we had to add a new board on the top after we took this top off.

The patina on the wood of this little kitchen was one of my favorite things about it. As we were taking it apart, I told Matt that we can repurpose the pieces. We could turn them into signs, boxes, or other ideas that I will think of on a random Tuesday.

I sanded the entire piece down because I wasn’t able to strip the wood. Then, I thought I would love the piece stained in a walnut color.

I didn’t.

Then, I thought I would love it painted a creamy white color.

I didn’t.

Once I painted it in “Anchor”, I loved it. It was just what this piece needed.

This piece was not going to sell as it was. It was broken. The knobs weren’t all there. The finish wasn’t great.

There were a lot of things that weren’t great about the piece, but a little repurposing and a makeover made it into something that is beautiful and functional again.
