How To Find Your Style For Your Home

4 Mins read

A lot of people struggle with finding the style for their homes. We are constantly inundated with beautiful homes through social media, TV, Pinterest, magazines, friends, family, etc. We see so many pretty things that we would love to incorporate into our home, but we become paralyzed thinking we have to come up with a style for our home before we start decorating it. Today, I wanted to talk about how to find your style for your home.

Let me start off by saying there are no rules. Yep! You read that right. There are no rules when it comes to decorating your home. The same goes for finding your style. No rules. There are tips, techniques, and strategies that help with these things, but there are no stringent rules you have to follow.

Wait.

There is one rule.

You have to love it.

That’s it. That is the only rule.

You and your family are the only people that have to love it. Nobody else gets an opinion. No one gets to grade it. No one gets to change it. It is your home. You are living there. You aren’t in design school. There isn’t a grading process. There is no award. Your goal is to find a style that you love. You don’t need a design degree or a TV show to find a style and start decorating your home.

We all want to live in a beautiful home but we get stuck on style. I am giving some easy tips for how to find your style for your home.

With all of that being said, I am going to share a few tips that will share how to find your style for your home.

Style Is A Loose Term

Thinking that you have to fit in one, perfectly molded style when decorating your home is false. Didn’t you like to color outside the lines a bit as a child? Don’t you like to push the envelope a little bit? Think of the style of your home in the same way. It doesn’t have to be black and white. There are a lot of gray areas in finding a style. Your style does not have to fit inside a box. It can go outside the lines. You may find that you like a mix of styles. GREAT! The term style should be a loose term. It is not so stringent. There is a lot of bending room with it.

It Is YOUR Style

It is always nice to ask family and friends for their opinion, but ultimately, it is your style. You live there. Your family lives there. An opinion here and there is fine, but don’t give it too much weight. You are paying the bills there. You are spending all the time there. The only weight is if you love it. It is your style. Your opinion is the only one that matters. If you struggle with this, I would recommend you don’t ask others for their opinion at all.

Style Board

This does not have to be a professional-looking board. It doesn’t have to be a board at all. It can be something you do online. Set up a Pinterest board for your style. Pin things that you are drawn to. Take an afternoon and use the tips I share for creating a vision board. Have fun with it. Sit down with your favorite drink, turn on some music, grab some magazines, and see what you are drawn to. Cut them out and attach them to a bulletin board or make a notebook with the things you are finding. The goal here is to see what is being repeated. What colors, textures, styles, etc. are you seeing repeating in this process? Those are the things that will help you narrow down a style.

More Than One

The thought that we need to have one style to make our home beautiful is ridiculous. When people ask me what my design style is, there is usually a bunch of words strung together. I like many styles. Some, I like from afar and others, I incorporate into our home. Anymore, I usually say, I don’t have a particular style. I decorate with what I like and what functions for our family. A mix of styles is okay and I think, gives your home more charm and character.

You Can Change It

Your style can change! Mine does all the time. I get bored and change things up all the time. You don’t have to stick with one style for the rest of your life. BORING! If you are finding you are starting to like a different style, start putting it in your spaces. If you are like me and shop frugally, a change in style is not hard or expensive.

Paint

I think choosing paint colors alone (no matter what style) is where people get stuck. I have shared all my tips for how to pick the right paint color every time. Click over to that post for those tips. I promise you, they will make all the difference when shopping for paint. When you are choosing paint colors, don’t think that the style you are drawn to has to have a certain paint color on the walls. Not true. All styles come in all colors. My rule of thumb is neutral colors on the walls make the rest of the space stand out.

Finding Your Style Doesn’t Have To Be Expensive

If you have been following along with My Creative Days for some time, you know my motto is that you can create a beautiful home on a dime. You can have any style of home without spending a lot of money on it. I share all my frugal shopping tips and tricks here, on my social media pages, and on YouTube. To see my latest thrifting haul, head HERE. Shopping thrift stores and yard sales are a great way to get a style for less, but you can also repurpose and upcycle items to get the look for less.

Have FUN!

Learning how to find your style for your home is nothing if it isn’t fun. If you aren’t having fun, why do it? Life is too short and making this process stressful is not worth it. The tips I have shared above should help eliminate the overwhelm and the choices and lead you into your style with ease.
