Bird’s Eye Maple Dresser Makeover

4 Mins read

This Bird’s Eye Maple Dresser Makeover was an easy piece to transform for the new owner.

Painting furniture always reminds me of where this all started. It takes me back to the days when Matt and I would pick up curbside finds and I would make them over to create the exact style I wanted for our home. We have come so far. It also reminds me that I truly love turning an ugly duckling into a swan and bringing it back to its full potential. That runs true in furniture and DIY projects I share and also in the flip house we do.

Now that we are in the midst of COVID-19 and being quarantined, I am having to get creative in how I find projects that I can work on. We are usually shopping yard sales this time of year and thrift stores are packed full of items that people have cleaned out during their spring cleaning weekends.

Thrift stores and yard sales are not a possibility for me right now, so I am finding projects elsewhere.

I know someone who owns an antique store in one of our favorite local towns. She has had to close her doors and she is not able to set up shop at any of the flea markets she goes to. Instead, she started a Facebook group where she is posting items for sale. People pay for the items and pick them up on the porch of her shop. It is our new reality during this time and it is the way I found this dresser.

This dresser did come with a mirror, but I will be using the mirror on its own. We may see if it will fit at the flip house

This dresser is Bird’s Eye Maple and in very good condition.

I am not a fan of the look of Bird’s Eye Maple. There. I said it.

Maybe I just don’t like it on this piece. It doesn’t show well in these photos, but it was just too much for this piece.

It was an easy decision for me to paint this dresser and with everything going on, I wanted to bring out a happy, spring color to bring it back to life.

Supplies Used For This Bird’s Eye Maple Dresser Makeover:

Dixie Belle Paint – Vintage Duck Egg

Zibra Square Paint Brush

Top Coat

This makeover was an easier one. All I did was clean the dresser inside and out. I shared the fun little “treasure” I found inside the dresser on my Instagram stories. (Make sure you are following me there for the “All Access” pass to all of our projects.)

Once the dresser was cleaned, I grabbed one of my favorite brushes from Zibra Paint and was ready to start painting. On this project, I used the square brush. I love the smaller brush because I feel in control and can get into every nook and cranny of a dresser like this. If you have not tried one of the Zibra brushes, you are missing out. I just ordered some more of them because they have been used so much in our flip house project by everyone who is painting and I can’t seem to find a few??? I am sure whoever used them, fell in love and “accidentally” had them fall in their tool bag as they were working there. 🙂 I don’t even care because I love them so much and want to share them with anyone I know who does any kind of painting. They are that amazing.

The great thing about this Bird’s Eye Maple Dresser Makeover was that I didn’t have to do a lot of prep work. I didn’t have to sand it down. I didn’t have to fix any veneer and I didn’t have to use the BOSS product from Dixie Belle Paint that I use on some projects.

This Bird’s Eye Maple Dresser Makeover just needed a couple of coats of paint and a top coat and it was ready to go.

I did distress it the tiniest bit in some random areas. Just to add a little more character.

Once the top coat was dry, I put the original knobs back on and it was ready for photos.

Painting furniture and bringing cast-away pieces back to life is therapy to me. I put on some of my favorite music or listen to a podcast and get lost in the painting process. Zibra brushes help with that. I have had my fair share of crappy brushes over the years. Nothing compares to tackling a project and having fantastic tools to get the job done.

With everything that is going on with the pandemic right now, I look forward to getting back to “my roots” and doing projects. It is harder to find projects right now, but I have a couple in the wings waiting for me to get started on them.

I would love to know if you are working on more projects through this time. What was the last project you finished?
