Thrift Store Lamp Makeover

2 Mins read

This Thrift Store Lamp Makeover is a great example of how you can take a thrifted piece and make it over to fit your home and style perfectly.

I always love a good thrifted makeover.

Shopping thrift stores is a great way to decorate your home on a dime but you do have to keep an open mind when you are browsing.
It is important to look past the characteristics of the piece as it is in the thrift store to really see the potential in what the piece could be.

I saw this little lamp at the thrift store and loved the shape and size.

Rub ‘N Buff

Old Rag

A little black lamp fits any style home but I saw it a little differently for our home.

tape damage

I wasn’t planning on this, but when I came home and took the price tag off the lamp, it removed some of the black finish from the lamp. UGH! That is the most frustrating thing. I don’t know why thrift stores use tape. It ruins so many items. I talked about that topic on my podcast recently HERE. I think thrift stores can do better and had to talk about it on the podcast.

So, since the tape removed the finish, I needed to cover that up before I could move on with the makeover.

sharpie

I could have used paint, but I didn’t want to have to paint the entire lamp back again. I just wanted to cover this area with black so I used a Sharpie.

rub

Once the marker dried, I grabbed Rub ‘N Buff in the color “Grecian Gold“.

rub n buff

I like to wear gloves when I use Rub ‘N Buff because I am messy with it. I used an old rag to apply the brassy color all over the lamp.

Rub ‘N Buff is so easy to use. I love the effect it gives when you apply it to anything. It is a different look than just paint. I could have spray painted this lamp, but I wanted to give it an old look. A look with some movement. I wanted it to look like it had some depth – like it has been around for some time. Spray paint would give it more of a solid color.

I absolutely love the look of the lamp now! It is exactly what I was looking for. The black lamp was fine but I was looking for something a little different for our home. I can use this lamp in so many little corners. It is small but looks so nice lit or unlit.

What do you think of the makeover?

Have you ever used Rub ‘N Buff before? If not, get some and give it a try. I promise you will be obsessed with what it can do.
