If you’ve ever walked into a thrift store and spotted an orange plastic pumpkin sitting on a shelf, you might have wondered if you found something special or just an old Halloween bucket someone donated. Vintage plastic pumpkin buckets have become one of my favorite Halloween finds to look for while thrifting because they are inexpensive, nostalgic, and add so much personality to Halloween decorating.
Every time I share a vintage Halloween find, I get questions about where I found it, how I know it’s old, and what people should look for when they’re thrifting. These little pumpkin buckets are one of those items that seem simple, but once you know what to look for, you’ll start spotting them everywhere.
There is just something about vintage Halloween decorations that newer pieces can’t quite recreate. These buckets were carried around neighborhoods on Halloween nights, filled with candy, and loved by kids decades ago. Now, they are finding their way into homes again as nostalgic Halloween decor.
If you’re hoping to find one of your own, here is what I look for when I’m thrifting for vintage plastic pumpkin buckets.
What Are Vintage Plastic Pumpkin Buckets?
Before Halloween decorations filled entire store aisles, many kids carried simple plastic pumpkin buckets while trick-or-treating.
These plastic jack-o’-lantern pails were popular from the mid-1900s through the 1980s and 1990s. They were affordable, reusable, and came in all kinds of fun pumpkin faces.
Some had big toothy smiles, some had silly expressions, and others had that classic triangle-eyed jack-o’-lantern look we all recognize.
Many of these buckets were made by companies like Empire Plastic Corp., Carolina Enterprises, Union Products, and other manufacturers that produced seasonal decorations.
Today, people love them because they bring back that old-fashioned Halloween feeling. They are the perfect mix of nostalgic and usually affordable, which makes them a fun thing to hunt for while thrifting.
How to Identify Vintage Plastic Pumpkin Buckets
The great thing about these Halloween finds is that you don’t need to be an expert collector to recognize them. There are a few simple things you can check when you find one.
Check the Bottom of the Bucket
The first thing I do when I pick up a pumpkin bucket is turn it over and look underneath.
Many vintage plastic pumpkin buckets have markings molded into the bottom that can give you clues about the manufacturer and age.
Some things you might find include:
- Empire Plastic Corp.
- Empire
- Carolina Enterprises
- Union Products
- Topstone
- General Foam Plastics
- Made in USA
- Copyright dates such as © 1968, © 1970s, or © 1980s
- Mold numbers or design numbers
One of the most recognizable names you’ll see is Empire Plastic Corp. Empire made many of the classic Halloween buckets people remember from childhood, and finding one with the Empire marking is always exciting.
Keep in mind, though, that a date stamped on the bottom doesn’t always mean that exact bucket was made that year. Many companies reused molds for years, so the date may represent when the design was created.
I like to look at all the clues together: the marking, the plastic, the design, and the condition.
Pay Attention to the Plastic
Older plastic items often have a different feel than newer reproductions.
When I pick up a vintage pumpkin bucket, I look for:
- thicker plastic
- thicker plastic handle
- molded details
- a slightly softer or aged appearance
- natural fading from years of use
Newer Halloween buckets often have very bright colors and a shiny finish. Vintage ones usually have more character.
Don’t automatically pass on one because the orange isn’t perfect or the paint has some wear. These buckets were actually used by kids on Halloween night, so a little wear is part of their story.
Look at the Handle
The handle can also give you clues about whether you’re looking at a vintage pumpkin bucket.
Many vintage pumpkin buckets have:
- black plastic handles
- thicker plastic handles
- handles attached through holes on each side
- small metal eyelets or grommets to hold the handles onto the pumpkin
While not every vintage bucket has them, spotting metal eyelets is another good clue that you’re looking at an older piece.
If the handle is missing, I don’t automatically leave it behind. If the bucket has a great face, a maker’s mark, or a good price, it may still be worth bringing home.
Study the Face
Honestly, this is my favorite part.
The personality of these buckets is what makes them so fun.
Some have:
- goofy smiles
- surprised expressions
- sleepy eyes
- classic jack-o’-lantern faces
The small differences are what make each one unique.
I love that older Halloween decorations weren’t always perfectly identical. Those little imperfections give them charm and make them feel like pieces that have a story.
How Much Are Vintage Pumpkin Buckets Worth?
One of the most common questions I see is, “How much is my vintage pumpkin bucket worth?”
The truth is, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. The value depends on several factors, including the manufacturer, age, condition, and how desirable the design is to collectors.
Some common vintage plastic pumpkin buckets may only sell for $10 to $20, while harder-to-find designs from manufacturers like Empire Plastic Corp. or buckets in excellent condition can sell for $50 or more. Rare examples can bring even higher prices, especially if they’re highly sought after by collectors.
When I’m thrifting, though, I look at it a little differently.
If I find a vintage pumpkin bucket for a few dollars and I love it, I’m putting it in my cart. I’m decorating with it, not planning to resell it.
As a general rule, these are the prices I’d feel good about paying while thrifting:
- $1–$5: Buy it! That’s a fantastic thrift store find.
- $10–$25: Still a fair price for a bucket in good condition or from a recognizable manufacturer.
- $25 and up: Take a closer look at the condition, maker’s mark, and overall design before deciding.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the best thrifted finds aren’t always the most valuable. Sometimes they’re simply the pieces that make you smile every time you decorate with them.
How to Decorate with Vintage Plastic Pumpkin Buckets
Finding vintage plastic pumpkin buckets is half the fun, but decorating with them is even better!
One of my favorite ways to use them is by filling them with faux fall stems, colorful leaves, or seasonal flowers. I love mixing the playful pumpkin faces with more traditional fall decor.
They also look right at home as part of a vintage Halloween vignette. Try pairing them with old books, candlesticks, vintage signs, papier-mache pumpkins, black cat figurines, or battery-operated candles.
Of course, these buckets still make the cutest candy holders! Fill one with wrapped candy and place it on your entry table, kitchen island, or buffet when you’re hosting Halloween guests.
Don’t forget about your porch, either. Group a few vintage pumpkin buckets with mums, real pumpkins, lanterns, and other thrifted Halloween finds to create a warm and welcoming entry.
Vintage plastic pumpkins aren’t expensive antiques or fancy collectibles, but they are pieces of Halloween history. They remind us of simpler Halloweens, neighborhood trick-or-treating, and the excitement of carrying a bucket home full of candy.
The next time you see an orange pumpkin bucket sitting on a thrift store shelf, don’t walk past it. Turn it over. Look for markings. Check the details.
