Simple fall decor ideas that are easy, affordable, and cozy! Use what you have, thrifted finds, natural elements, and simple DIYs to decorate for fall.
You don’t need to buy a cart full of pumpkins or completely redecorate your house to make it feel like fall.
After more than 20 years of decorating, DIYing, and creating seasonal projects, I’ve learned that some of the simplest changes can make the biggest difference.
If you love the cozy feeling of fall but don’t want your home covered in orange pumpkins and seasonal signs, these simple fall decor ideas are for you.
Most of these ideas use things you already have, things you can find while thrifting, or small changes that don’t take an entire weekend to pull off.
The goal isn’t to decorate more. It’s to make what you already have work a little harder.

Shop Your House for Simple Fall Decor Ideas
Before you buy anything new, walk through your house and look at your everyday decor with fresh eyes.
That basket you’ve had in the living room might look completely different in your entryway. A vase you normally use for flowers could hold dried branches. A stack of vintage books can become the base for a seasonal vignette.
Look for things like:
- Baskets
- Wooden bowls
- Vintage books
- Cutting boards
- Pottery
- Brass pieces
- Candlesticks
- Trays
- Quilts and blankets
- Vintage frames
Move things from one room to another and see what you can create.
Sometimes decorating is simply rearranging.
And it’s free.
Add Fall Color Without Adding Fall Decor
One of my favorite ways to make my home feel like fall is to bring in the colors of fall instead of adding a bunch of decorations that specifically say “fall.”
And you don’t necessarily have to buy anything new.
One thing I love to do this time of year is pull out my old books in warm fall colors. I look for covers in brown, rust, olive green, burgundy, yellow, cream, and tan and use them around the house on shelves, tables, mantels, and even kitchen counters. They add color and texture without looking like seasonal decor.
These are also colors I look for when I’m thrifting. Instead of asking, “Is this fall decor?” I look for things that have the right color, texture, or shape to make my home feel warmer.
Look for:
- Amber glass
- Wooden bowls and cutting boards
- Brass or copper pieces
- Vintage pottery
- Baskets
- Warm-colored artwork
- Books with brown, rust, olive, or burgundy covers
You don’t need to change everything. Pick two or three warm colors and repeat them throughout the room. It will instantly feel more like fall without looking like you went shopping for a whole new collection of seasonal decor.
That’s the kind of simple fall decorating I love. Use what you have, keep your eyes open when you’re thrifting, and let the colors and textures do the work.
Look for Fall Shapes and Textures for Simple Fall Decor Ideas
One of my favorite things about thrifting is that I don’t have to find something labeled “fall” to find something that works beautifully for the season.
When I’m walking through a thrift store, I look for shapes and textures that make a room feel cozy.
For example, this time of year, keep an eye out for:
- Wooden bowls – Fill one with pinecones, acorns or apples.
- Vintage baskets – Use one to hold blankets or create a simple entryway display.
- Old crocks and pottery – They make great vessels for branches, dried flowers or fall stems.
- Brass candlesticks – Group several together on a table or mantel for instant warmth.
- Vintage trays – Use one to corral candles, books and a few seasonal pieces.
- Quilts and woven textiles – Drape one over a chair or the edge of a basket.
- Old frames – Swap in a fall print, a vintage botanical or even a piece of fabric.
I also like to think about how I can use something, rather than what it was originally intended for.
A basket doesn’t have to be a basket of “fall things.” A vintage crock doesn’t have to become a pumpkin container. An old tray can become the base for an entire fall vignette.
That’s where thrifting gets fun; you aren’t shopping for fall decor. You’re looking for pieces that can help you create it.

Bring the Outdoors In for Simple Fall Decor Ideas
You don’t have to buy a bunch of faux stems to add fall texture to your home.
Look outside.
Branches, pine cones, acorns, dried grasses, and leaves can all bring that cozy fall feeling into your home.
Try putting a few branches in a large pitcher or vase. Fill a wooden bowl with pine cones. Add dried stems to a thrifted crock.
The imperfect shapes and natural textures keep fall decorating from feeling too manufactured.

Create One Simple Fall Vignette
You don’t need to decorate every surface in your house.
Pick one small area and create a simple fall moment.
It could be:
- Your entry table
- A kitchen shelf
- Your coffee table
- A bathroom counter
- A bookshelf
- A nightstand
I usually start with something that gives the display height, add something with texture, and then finish with one or two seasonal elements.
For example:
A vintage vase + books + a small pumpkin.
or
A basket + a cozy blanket + a candle.
or
A thrifted frame + brass candlestick + dried branches.
You don’t need ten things to make a vignette work. Sometimes three well-chosen pieces are enough.
Add Cozy Texture
Fall is about more than pumpkins and leaves.
It’s also about how your home feels.
Bring out the chunky knit blanket. Add a woven basket. Layer a quilt over the back of a chair. Swap one lightweight pillow for something with more texture.
Think:
- Woven
- Chunky knit
- Linen
- Velvet
- Wood
- Leather
- Quilts
- Natural fibers
You don’t have to replace everything you own.
Even one cozy blanket thrown over the back of a chair can make a room feel ready for fall.
Change Your Lighting
This is one of the easiest fall decorating tricks, and it doesn’t really look like decorating at all.
As the days get shorter, change the way you light your rooms.
Turn off some of the overhead lights and use table lamps, floor lamps, candles or other warm accent lighting instead.
That softer lighting instantly makes a room feel warmer and cozier.
Sometimes the easiest way to make your house feel like fall isn’t adding anything.
It’s simply changing the atmosphere.
Make One Fall DIY You Really Love
I love a good DIY, obviously. But after years of making seasonal projects, I don’t think you need to make a new piece of decor for every room in your house.
Instead, choose one project you really love.
Maybe it’s a wreath.
It could be a centerpiece.
Maybe it’s something you can put on a shelf or hang on the wall.
Let that one handmade piece be the seasonal statement.
I’ve made plenty of fall DIYs over the years, including these Minimalist DIY Fall Decor Projects and this DIY fall centerpiece.
If you’re short on time, I also have fall DIY projects you can make in 30 minutes or less.

Let the Pumpkins Be the Accent
I love pumpkins as much as anyone, but they don’t have to be the entire decorating plan.
Instead of putting pumpkins everywhere, group a few together where they will have the most impact.
Try placing a few small pumpkins in a bowl, adding one to a stack of books, or using a few as part of a simple centerpiece.
Then let the rest of your décor wood, baskets, pottery, books, candles, and natural elements create the rest of the fall feeling.
This keeps your home seasonal without making every surface look the same.
Know When You’re Done
This might be the most important part of this simple fall decor ideas post.
You don’t have to keep adding.
If you’ve added a few warm colors, some cozy texture, a little natural greenery or dried stems, and a couple of seasonal pieces you love, you might be done.
I know how easy it is to look at one little area and think, “Maybe I need something else here.”
Sometimes you do.
But sometimes the space looks better because you stop.
Simple fall decor ideas aren’t about seeing how much fall decor you can fit into your home.
It’s about creating a home that feels warm, cozy, and welcoming for the season.
