When I first started flipping furniture, I truly believed I was doing everything right. I found pieces I loved, picked paint colors that felt safe, and jumped straight into painting because I was excited to see the transformation. But reality hit fast. Paint peeled. Colors looked completely different from what I imagined. Pieces I thought were great turned out to be of poor quality. If you’ve ever had a furniture flip gone wrong, I want you to know this upfront: you are not doing anything wrong, you are just learning.
I get asked a lot about projects that have gone wrong. I have been doing projects for over twenty years. SO MANY HAVE GONE WRONG. I just don’t remember them all. I do know that in the beginning, I didn’t know what I was doing and made all the mistakes most newbies do.
Almost every lesson I teach today came from a project that didn’t turn out the way I hoped. Here’s how I think about failed flips now, what usually goes wrong, and what I do to fix it.

When the Paint Doesn’t Stick (and Starts Peeling)
This was one of my earliest and most frustrating mistakes. I would paint a piece, step back feeling proud, and then days later notice the paint lifting or peeling right off. At the time, I thought it was the paint’s fault. What I didn’t understand yet was how critical prep work really is.
I wasn’t cleaning the pieces properly or sanding enough, or at all. Primers were needed, but I didn’t know when to use them. Once I slowed down and learned how to prep furniture the right way, the problem almost completely disappeared. Now, when paint peels, I see it as feedback. It’s telling me something was skipped or rushed.
When the Color Looked Great… Until It Didn’t
I can’t tell you how many times I picked a color I loved on the paint chip, only to hate it once it was on the furniture. Early on, I assumed the problem was my taste. In reality, I hadn’t learned how lighting, undertones, and wood type affect paint color.
Now, I always test colors first on the back of a piece or on a scrap board. I also think about who I’m flipping the piece for and where it might live. If the color doesn’t work, I don’t panic anymore. Paint is one of the easiest things to fix, even though it doesn’t feel that way in the moment.

When the Furniture Was the Problem (Not My Skills)
One of the hardest lessons I learned was that not all furniture is worth flipping. In the beginning, I didn’t know how to spot solid wood pieces or recognize poor construction. I poured time and money into pieces that were never going to look high-end or sell well.
Once I learned what to look for, real wood, sturdy construction, quality details, my flips improved dramatically. When a project goes wrong now, I always ask myself if the piece itself was the right choice. Sometimes the best fix is knowing when to walk away.
When I Used the Wrong Products
When I first started, there weren’t as many products on the market as there are now. Back then, I used whatever paint or supplies were cheapest, assuming they would all work the same. They don’t.
Over time, I learned which paints work best for certain surfaces, when primer is necessary, and which tools make the job easier instead of harder. Now, I have my list of favorite products that I always have on hand. Using the right products doesn’t just improve the final result; it saves time, money, and frustration. TRUST ME!!!!

Furniture Flip Gone Wrong? What I Do Now
When something doesn’t go as planned today, I don’t spiral. I pause and troubleshoot. I ask myself: Did I prep enough? Is the surface clean and sanded properly? Did I choose the right product for this piece? Is the color truly wrong, or do I just need to see it finished?
Most problems have simple solutions once you know what to look for. Experience teaches you how to stay calm and fix issues instead of giving up halfway through a project.

Thinking About Flipping Furniture or Taking It Further?
I’ve been flipping furniture for over twenty years, and I still pick up pieces whenever I find them, not because I have to, but because I love the creative outlet and the transformation. What I eventually learned changed everything: flipping doesn’t have to be exhausting or confusing. When I got intentional with my time, skills, and opportunities, the work felt lighter, and the path forward finally made sense.
