We recently purchased another investment property, and it came with everything inside. I knew the previous owners, and he was always an avid tennis player. Some of his vintage wood rackets were left at the house. When I was moving them, one of them broke. As soon as I picked up the broken head of the racket, I instantly thought it looked like a pumpkin. I had to repurpose it.

I see these rackets in thrift stores and at yard sales all the time. They are perfect to upcycle into a cute pumpkin wreath or wall hanging that will add charm to your fall home decor. The round racket head makes the perfect pumpkin shape. You can customize each one in so many different ways. This is how I made mine.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

  • Prep the Racket
Clean the vintage racket and remove any loose strings if needed. You need to cut the racket handle where you want it. I broke mine in the perfect spot, but just leave a “stem” and cut the rest of the handle off.
  • Weave the Yarn
Weave the chunky knit yarn in and out of each square of the racket head until it is filled. The yarn I used stayed in place, but you could use some hot glue to secure where you start and stop the yarn.

  • Embelish
You can do this any way you like. I added a jack-o-lantern face with black construction paper. Then, I added a bow to the top and some orange twine as well. I also hot-glued some faux leaves around the face.

  • Add Wire To Hang
I used some floral wire and pushed it through the top of the racket and twisted it in the back to make a hanger.

This DIY Tennis Racket Pumpkin is such a fun way to combine repurposing with seasonal decorating. It’s inexpensive, unique, and SO EASY to make. The kids can help with this one, too! You can weave as you watch your favorite show! I think this would be fun to do as a collage with different colored yarn.
