Vintage fall decor ideas are some of my favorite things to share because fall is my favorite season! I love everything about this time of year: the cooler weather, cozying up the house, and especially bringing all of those warm fall colors and textures into my home.
And if you know me, you know I LOVE vintage decor. Put vintage decor and fall together and I’m happy.
I especially love finding vintage pieces in warm fall colors and then mixing them with the things I already have. A thrifted brass candlestick, an old pottery pitcher, a stack of vintage books, ironstone, a beautiful basket, or anything with a warm rust, brown, mustard, or olive color can instantly make a space feel ready for fall.
And, of course, one of my favorite places to find these pieces is the thrift store.
I don’t usually go thrifting looking for something that says “fall” on it. I’m looking for the colors, textures, shapes, and materials that feel like fall to me. Sometimes I find an old piece that is perfect just as it is. Other times, I find something that inspires me to turn it into something completely different.
That’s what I love about decorating with vintage pieces. There isn’t really a right or wrong way to do it.
What I Look for When Thrifting for Fall
When I’m looking for vintage pieces to use in my fall decorating, I pay attention to color first.
I love finding pieces in warm, earthy colors like:
- Rust
- Brown
- Mustard
- Olive green
- Deep red
- Cream
- Amber
- Terracotta
But I also look for materials that add warmth and texture.
Brass, copper, wood, pottery, ironstone, baskets, and old books are some of my favorite things to find.
Side note: Sometimes copper pieces need a little love before I bring them into my decorating, and this easy way to clean and polish copper makes such a difference.
And here’s a little secret: I don’t need the item to be vintage fall decor.
A vintage bowl isn’t fall decor. But fill it with pine cones, acorns, or a few pumpkins and suddenly it works beautifully for fall.
An old pitcher isn’t fall decor. Put some branches or dried flowers in it and you’ve got a gorgeous fall arrangement.
That’s how I like to decorate.
Mix Vintage Pieces with Your Fall Decor
With vintage fall decor ideas, I don’t think every piece in a fall display needs to be vintage.
I think mixing old and new makes a space feel much more natural.
I’ll mix thrifted finds with DIY projects, things I’ve had for years, and a few newer pieces.
Try pairing:
- A vintage brass candlestick with a pumpkin.
- Old books with a fall-colored vase.
- Ironstone with dried flowers.
- A thrifted basket with cozy blankets.
- Vintage pottery with fall branches.
- An old wooden bowl with pine cones.
- Amber glass with candles.
It’s the combination that makes it work.

Create a Fall Vignette with Vintage Finds
You don’t need a lot of vintage pieces to make an impact.
One of my favorite Vintage Fall Decor Ideas is to create a small vignette.
Start with one larger piece. Maybe it’s a vintage pitcher, crock, basket, or bowl.
Then add something with height, like a candlestick or a stack of books.
Finally, add something seasonal.
That could be a small pumpkin, dried flowers, a branch, pine cones, or even a fall-colored candle.
If you need a little help putting these pieces together, I have some easy fall vignette ideas here. Vignettes are one of my favorite ways to use those random vintage and thrifted pieces I find because you can keep changing them throughout the season.
The trick is to play around with the pieces until you like how they look together.
And don’t be afraid to move things around!
Sometimes the piece you thought would be the star ends up working better somewhere else.
Vintage Fall Decor Ideas Don’t Have to Be Orange
I love fall colors, but that doesn’t mean everything has to be bright orange. Some of my favorite vintage fall decorating uses muted, neutral colors.
Also, think about rust, olive green, brown, burgundy, mustard, cream, and warm wood tones.
These colors work especially well with vintage pieces because they already have that aged, collected feeling.
And if you don’t love traditional orange fall decor, this is a great way to decorate for the season without making your house feel overly themed.
Vintage Fall Decor Ideas on a Budget
One of the biggest reasons I love decorating with vintage and thrifted pieces is that it doesn’t have to cost much.
You can find so many beautiful things at thrift stores, estate sales, flea markets, and garage sales. And don’t overlook the things that aren’t in perfect condition. A little wear is part of what makes vintage pieces so special.
I would much rather have one interesting vintage piece with some character than five brand-new pieces that all look the same.
Before you go shopping, though, shop your own house first.
Move things from one room to another. Look at old pieces you haven’t used in a while. Pull out some books, baskets, pottery or dishes and see how they look with your fall decor.
You might already have everything you need.
The thing I love most about vintage fall decor ideas is that they don’t have to look perfect.
They can look collected and mismatched. They can have some wear and tear, and they can tell a story.
And when you mix those vintage finds with warm fall colors, natural elements, and a few seasonal DIY projects, you can create a home that feels cozy without feeling like you decorated it all at once.
So the next time you’re at a thrift store, don’t just walk past the things that aren’t labeled “fall.”
Look for the brass, pottery, old books, baskets, and warm fall colors.
You might just find the piece that makes your whole fall display come together.
