Repurposed Wall Art: An Easy DIY You Can Change for Every Season

This repurposed wall art project started with a pile of random things I had on hand and an idea from Matt that I wasn’t even sure was possible. Somehow, those random pieces came together to make one of my favorite DIY wall decor projects.

The best part? You can change what you put in the little tubes throughout the year, so this isn’t wall art you make once and use for only one season.

I originally made this as repurposed fall wall art, filling the tubes with dried hydrangeas. Still, you could easily change the flowers, greenery, or other seasonal decorations to use this piece all year long.

And we only had about $5 invested in the whole project!

What You’ll Need to Make Repurposed Wall Art

You can change the supplies depending on what you find or have on hand.

For the version I made, we used:

• Picture frame. Ours was 24″ x 36″.
• Galvanized metal. We repurposed a chicken feeder.
• Small plastic or glass tubes.
• Conduit straps
• Jigsaw
• Metal blade
• Hammer
• Paint for the frame (optional)
• Screws and basic tools

A thrifted frame is perfect for this project. You don’t need to find one exactly like mine. Look for the size and shape that works for the wall where you want to hang your finished piece.

How This Repurposed Wall Art Came Together

This project started as a pile of random pieces I thought we could use.

I had a few different things gathered, but after talking it over with Matt, he came up with the idea of using a chicken feeder as the backing for the frame.

I was immediately on board because I love the look of galvanized metal!

Prepare the Galvanized Metal

We started with an old chicken feeder that we had on hand.

Matt cut the ends off the chicken feeder using a jigsaw with a metal blade.

Then he used a heavy hammer to flatten the metal.

This is one of those projects where you really have to look at an old item and imagine what it could become instead of what it was originally made for.

Cut the Metal to Fit the Frame

We needed the galvanized metal to cover the back of the frame.

Matt used the jigsaw and metal blade to cut the flattened chicken feeder into pieces that would fit.

We were able to get four pieces from the chicken feeder to cover the entire frame.

We actually used one of our yardsticks to help hold the metal in place while cutting. Whatever works to get the job done around here!

Paint and Distress the Frame

I painted the wood frame gray and then sanded it down well.

The galvanized metal with the weathered gray frame already gave this repurposed wall art a rustic, collected look.

Isn’t it magical already?!

Add the Tubes

The next part of the project was adding the little tubes that would hold the flowers.

I found these tubes at a yard sale, which is one of the reasons I love repurposed projects so much. You don’t necessarily have to go to a craft store and buy everything new.

Look around at thrift stores, garage sales, and even things you already have at home. You may find the perfect pieces in places you wouldn’t normally think to look.

Attach the Tubes

We used metal clamp fasteners to attach the tubes to the galvanized metal.

You’ll want to use one clamp for each tube and space them according to the size of your frame and the look you want.

At this point, the project really started looking like the repurposed wall art I had pictured in my head.

Add Flowers or Greenery

I originally planned to fill the tubes with faux fall flowers and berries I already had.

But then I went outside and saw these dried hydrangeas.

They stole my heart and were the perfect fit for this project.

And just like that, the finished DIY wall decor came together.

Change It for Every Season

This is what makes this repurposed wall art so much more useful than a piece of seasonal decor.

The tubes make it easy to change what is displayed throughout the year.

For fall, you could use:

• Dried hydrangeas
• Fall leaves
• Faux berries
• Wheat
• Small branches

For winter, try:

• Evergreen clippings
• Pine branches
• Small pinecones
• Faux winter greenery

For spring and summer, you could add:

• Fresh flowers
• Faux flowers
• Small greenery
• Dried flowers
• Herbs

You could even leave the tubes empty for a simpler, industrial look.

The possibilities are only limited by what you can fit inside the tubes.

A $5 Repurposed Wall Art Project

I still can’t believe how well this project turned out with only $5 invested.

It started as a pile of random things and turned into a large piece of wall decor that I could decorate differently for every season.

That is exactly why I love repurposing.

You don’t need a huge budget to create something beautiful for your home. Sometimes you just need to look at what you already have a little differently.
