2 Mins read

We’re working on our latest flip house right now, and let me tell you—this one is a time capsule straight out of the 1960s. The entire house hasn’t been touched since it was built, and the kitchen really shows it: the original cabinets, outdated counters, and original appliances. Of course, like all of our flips, we’re working with a strict budget, so I thought it would be the perfect time to share how to update an outdated kitchen on a budget. These are the tips and tricks we’ve used in past flips (and some that we’ll be using in this current kitchen) that make the biggest visual and functional impact, without spending a ton of money.

1. Paint the Cabinets

One of the best ways to update an outdated kitchen on a budget is to paint your cabinets. Seriously, paint is magic. 3. Peel-and-Stick Backsplash

4. Upgrade the Lighting

Old light fixtures can seriously date your kitchen. Swapping in a modern pendant, flush mount, or chandelier is a great way to bring your space into the current decade. Even spray painting your current fixtures can help if you’re working with a tight budget. Remember: good lighting makes everything look better!

5. DIY Countertops

Replacing countertops can be pricey, but if you’re looking for how to update an outdated kitchen on a budget, don’t skip the DIY options. There are amazing paint kits and epoxy products that can help mimic stone, marble, or even concrete.

6. Open Shelving or Removing Cabinet Doors

Open shelving can modernize your kitchen and give you a great place to display pretty dishes or vintage finds. If you don’t want to install new shelves, just remove a few cabinet doors for a similar effect. This is an easy way to update an outdated kitchen on a budget without spending anything.

7. Style It Like You Mean It

You don’t have to gut the kitchen to make it feel brand new. Add a cute runner rug, bring in plants, update your dish towels, and corral your wooden spoons in a vintage crock. These little styling moments are key when you’re figuring out how to update an outdated kitchen on a budget.
