What do you call it? A sideboard? A buffet? A server? A credenza? I seem to call them different things depending on the day, the piece, or the room it’s going in. But with the unique pullout feature on this one, sideboard feels exactly right. Today, I’m sharing a DIY green sideboard makeover that took a dated, forgotten piece and gave it new life with just a few simple updates. This neutral, rich green completely transformed the entire feel of the piece, and I couldn’t love it more.
The Before
When I first saw this sideboard, I knew it had potential. The shape was classic, the structure was solid, and the details begged to be highlighted. The original finish, however, was dull and scratched, and definitely not doing it any favors. The pullout side sold me on the piece. I loved it as I saw it but when I was looking at it very closely (as you should before buying any flip) I saw the knob, pulled it out and immediately said, “SOLD”!
That’s where a DIY green sideboard makeover comes in. A little paint, some cleaning and sanding, and suddenly you’ve got a piece that turns heads in any room.
Prepping the Sideboard
As with any furniture makeover, prep is key. I started by removing all of the hardware and giving the piece a good cleaning to remove any grease, dust, or grime. I share tips for cleaning furniture before a makeover in my post HERE. Then I lightly scuff-sanded the surface to help the paint adhere.

Choosing the Perfect Green
Green is having a major moment right now, and for good reason—it adds warmth, depth, and sophistication to any space. It is also my favorite color. I chose a neutral, earthy green that leans classic rather than trendy. It’s neutral enough to work with a variety of decor styles.
For this DIY green sideboard makeover, I used a high-quality furniture paint that includes primer, paint, and topcoat in one, which makes the process faster and easier.
I applied two coats, letting it dry fully between each one.
Finishing Touches to this DIY green sideboard makeover
To complete the look, I put the hardware back on that came with it. It pairs so beautifully with the green and fits the piece perfectly. The shape, size, and finish of the hardware add just the right amount of vintage charm and character without overpowering the updated look.
The unique pullout on this sideboard is one of its most charming features, so I made sure it stayed fully functional and gave it the same care as the rest of the piece.
