Let me start by saying this: I don’t actually hate cleaning. In fact, it’s one of the things I do when I’m stressed. But even though I don’t mind it, I’m always looking for cleaning hacks for people who want the process to be easier, faster, and more efficient without complicated routines, endless products, or spending hours cleaning a house that’s meant to be lived in.
I’m not interested in complicated routines, 47 different products, or spending an entire Saturday deep cleaning a house that’s just going to be lived in again by Monday. So whether you truly hate cleaning or you don’t mind it but want it to be easier, faster, and more efficient, these are the cleaning hacks for people that I swear by. They’re realistic, low-effort, and actually work in real homes.

Cleaning Hacks for People Who Hate Cleaning
Clean in the “In-Between” Moments
Some of the best cleaning gets done while you’re waiting.
Instead of scrolling your phone:
- Wipe the counter while the coffee brews.
- Clean the microwave while something heats up.
- Swish the toilet while the shower warms.
These tiny moments add up, and they don’t feel like cleaning because you weren’t going to do anything productive during that time anyway.
Stop Using So Many Cleaning Products
This alone makes cleaning feel overwhelming for people.
I stick to:
- This MULTI-PURPOSE cleaner
- One bathroom cleaner
- Glass cleaner
- Not Paper Towels
That’s it.
Fewer products = faster decisions = quicker cleaning. You don’t need a specialty cleaner for every surface in your house.

Keep Cleaning Supplies Where You Use Them
If your bathroom cleaner lives in the kitchen, cleaning suddenly feels like a project.
Keep:
- Bathroom spray and cloths in each bathroom.
- Cleaning wipes under the sink.
- Toilet cleaner in the bathroom.
If it’s easy to grab, you’re more likely to clean as you notice things instead of letting it pile up.

Set a Timer
This is one of my favorite cleaning hacks for people who don’t like to clean.
Set a timer for:
- 5 minutes
- 10 minutes
- 15 minutes
Clean until the timer goes off. Then stop.
This keeps cleaning from turning into an all-day event and prevents burnout. You’d be shocked at how much you can get done when you know there’s a clear endpoint.
Use Baskets to Contain the Mess (Not Organize It)
This is real-life cleaning, not magazine cleaning.
Instead of trying to perfectly organize everything:
- Toss clutter into a basket.
- Put the basket where it belongs.
- Move on.
Your house looks instantly cleaner, and you can deal with the basket later (or not).
Clean One Thing — Not One Room
When people say “I’m going to clean the kitchen,” it instantly feels overwhelming.
Instead, clean:
- Just the counters
- Only the sink
- Just the floor
Finishing one task gives you momentum without mental overload.
Don’t Over-Clean What Doesn’t Matter
This one might be controversial, but it’s freeing.
Baseboards, ceiling fans, the tops of door frames, they don’t need weekly attention in most homes.
Focus on:
- Surfaces you touch
- Areas you see daily
- Spaces that impact how your home feels
Everything else can wait.

Do a Nighttime Sink Reset
This tiny habit makes mornings feel calmer.
Before bed:
- Clear the sink
- Wipe the counter
- Run the dishwasher if needed
Waking up to a clean kitchen instantly makes the house feel more put together, even if nothing else is perfect.
“Clean Enough” Is More Than Enough
Your house does not need to be spotless to be clean.
It needs to be:
- Functional
- Comfortable
- Livable
If cleaning helps you decompress, great.
If you just want things done quickly so you can move on with your life, that’s great too.
The goal isn’t perfect. It’s making cleaning work for you, not against you.
If you hate cleaning, I hope these tips make it feel less overwhelming.
If you don’t mind cleaning as I do, I hope they make it faster and easier.
Either way, you don’t need more products or harder routines. You just need simpler systems that fit real life.
